This book investigates the pictorial figurations, aesthetic styles and visual tactics through which visual art and popular culture attempt to appeal to “all of us”. Scholars from several European countries discuss a key figure these practices bring into play—the “everybody”—in an interdisciplinary way. The contributions focus on the operation and genealogies of popularisation and communication practices, which can assume populist forms, in contemporary democracies. They also address the ambivalences of attraction, i.e. the ways in which visual creations evoke for example desire as well as hatred, invite identification or produce rejection and trigger mimicry as well as conversion processes.

Everything seems to be curated today: meals, music, marriage ceremonies. But beyond these inflationary uses, also the professional curation of museums, exhibitions or collections received increased attention, the arena, where curating as research and means in the production of knowledge comes to the fore. University courses in this traditional sphere of curating are booming, but there is little academic literature and it often remains vague what the role of the curator and their methods and repertoire of tools might look like. For me as an artist, curator, and academic, but also for the research area Visual and Material Culture Studies at the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture, JLU Giessen, these questions and how curatorial practice relates to academic work are of central concern.

The tasks and missions of curators are manifold; they develop and define topics, they explore relevant (artistic) material and follow up on the current state of research, they interpret and contextualise objects, establish connections between individual exhibits and artistic positions. On_Culture is an open access e-journal, conceptualized and edited by researchers at the GCSC. The focus of the journal is on transparency and openness as well as reflexivity and processes of metaization in dealing with concepts in the study of culture. Therefore, the journal hosts a wide range of formats and modes of presentation: peer-reviewed scholarly articles and review essays as well as artistic and experimental contributions.

On_Culture serves as a platform for all those who wish to reflect collaboratively upon current discourses in the study of culture. We propose the development of emergent themes, concepts, and methods as a collective process. Our aim is to facilitate this process and to disclose the cultural dynamics at work in it.

gefühlsräume – raumgefühle release

Das sub\urban Heft „gefühlsräume – raumgefühle“ ist vor kurzem erschienen. Deswegen möchten wir alle Sympathisant_innen & Kritiker_innen sowie Neugierige zu einem lockeren Treff einladen:

Da uns die Idee für den dem Themenheft vorausgegangenen Workshop an der ping-pong-Platte kam, möchten wir genau dort das Heft mit Euch begrüßen und sozusagen im direkten Schlagabtausch diskutieren. Daher bitten wir darum, Tischtennisschläger mitzubringen. Es wird also keine allzu akademische Veranstaltung, sondern eher eine Plattenplauderei.

sub\urban : orwell court

Die neue Ausgabe von sub\urban ist erschienen: das Themenheft „gefühlsräume – raumgefühle“ in Zusammenarbeit mit Benno Gammerl und Rainer Herrn.

Neben den thematischen Aufsätzen zu den vielfältigen Verschränkungen von Gefühlen und urbanen Räumen, zeigt eine Debatte zu Gaston Bachelards 1957 erschienen Text „Poetik des Raumes“, dass dieses in der kritischen Stadtforschung bislang wenig beachtete Themenfeld eine lohnende Perspektive darstellt. Unter anderem gibt es auch einen Artikel vom mir:

Orwell Court. Gegen/Blicke in einer betongewordenen Wohnutopie im Londoner Nordosten

Die Fotoserie und der Begleittext untersuchen Blicke und Gegenblicke innerhalb des im Londoner Stadtteil Hackney gelegenen Wohnkomplexes „Orwell Court“, der von Videoüberwachung, Zäunen und Warnschildern dominiert wird. Assoziationen zu dessen Namen, der auf den Autoren des dystopischen Romans 1984 verweist, dienen als Referenz für die Betrachtung des speziellen Raumgefühls des „Orwell Court“, der (Sicherheits)Architektur, sowie deren Individualisierung und Subversion.

Experiencing Space – Spacing Experience

The publication Experiencing Space – Spacing Experience: Concepts, Practices, and Materialities of the GCSC conference at  Ruhrtriennale 2013 was finally released. The book is available at WVT Verlag. Containing also one of my articles:

Phantomgesichter

Endlich ist das von Uli Richtmeyer herausgegebene Buch zur Konferenz und Ausstellung „Phantomgesichter“ in Potsdam erschienen.

Biometrische Verfahrensweisen stehen im Zentrum gegenwärtiger Sicherheits- und Überwachungsprogramme. Auch in diversen fotografischen Apparaten, die das Material für digitale Bilddatenbanken liefern, haben sie sich fest etabliert. Obwohl sie auf komplexen Berechnungen basieren, sind biometrische Verfahren wesentlich als Bildbearbeitungstechnologien zu verstehen – so die Grundannahme des Bandes. Erst aus dieser Perspektive gelangen die spezifischen Sicherheiten und Unsicherheiten biometrischer Bilder in den Blick. Sie fallen besonders dort auf, wo sich Biometrie auf ein klassisches Objekt der Erkennungsdienste, das menschliche Gesicht, bezieht. Welche Konsequenzen sich aus der Vorgeschichte und Gegenwart der verwendeten Bildtechnologien sowie ihren trivialen und professionellen Gebrauchsweisen für den Status des artifiziellen Gesichtsbildes ergeben, gilt es nun zu hinterfragen.
