Bounama Magassa
Desolation et Immigration/Desolation and Immigration, photography,
text, 2010.

In the series waiting has turned into mourning. The portraits show people holding pictures of family members and loved ones who have died or disappeared on their journey. The photographs are accompanied by short texts that allow for glances into the lives of the people. The artist is no neutral observer, identifies with the people and has himself once played with the thought of departing for Europe.

Bounama Magassa works as freelancing photographer in Bamako, Mali among others for the French-language daily L’Essor. He deals with the everyday life of people in Mali and west-Africa and in documentary pictures shows their desires and hopes.
